President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta following his re-election for more five years of office.
This was manifested in the congratulatory message from President Musevevi after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the highly contested 2017 presidential elections on Friday evening.
“On behalf of the government of Uganda and as current Chairperson of the East African Community, I would like to extend congratulations to Your Excellency on your re-election as President of the Republic of Kenya,” Said President Museveni in the message.
He informed President Uhuru that his re-election is a clear testimony of the trust he has earned from the people of Kenya and appreciation of efforts he has made towards the development of his country and the region in his first term as president.
“As you embark on your new term of office, I am confident that you will continue with these efforts and the important task of promoting the unity and development of your people,” Mr Museveni added.
He praised Mr. Uhuru that under his leadership, Kenya has continued to be a key regional economic, peace and security partner.
Mr. Museveni promised to continue working with Mr Kenyatta to further strengthen relations between Uganda and Kenya as well as the entire East African region.
“I therefore look forward to continue working with you to strengthen further the brotherly relations and cooperation between our two countries, as well as other EAC partner states in the quest to develop our region,” said Mr. Museveni.
“Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration” he concluded.
Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, 55, was re-elected with just over 54 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election, easily surpassing the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff, according to an announcement from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. Mr. Raila Odinga, 72, the opposition leader, received 44.7 percent of the vote.
