The Vice President Jessica Alupo on Wednesday embarked on a guided official tour of Kilembe copper mines in Kasese District.

VP Alupo was joined by several ministers including; Peter Lokeris, Minister of State for National Guidance, Godfrey Baluku Kiime Kabbyanga, Minister of State, Office of the Vice President, Diana Nankunda Kagyenyi Mutasingwa, and Minister of State for Trade, Harriet Ntabazi.

Alupo’s tour was to establish government’s readiness to revamp Kilembe copper mines.

Kilembe mines is located in Kilembe, a suburb of Kasese Town at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains in the Western region and is the largest copper mine in the country, covering more than 128 square miles of land.

Copper mining at Kilembe was stopped in the late 1970s due to the civil wars in Uganda coupled with the fall in copper prices on the world market. Government is now in the process of reviving the copper mine following Cabinet decision on January 14, 2019.
