ENTEBBE. National Medical Stores (NMS) has revealed that it spent Shs900b on distribution of drugs to 3,065 Government health facilities in the country during Financial Year 2017/18.

Moses Kamabare, Executive Director National Medical Stores said NMS delivers door to door at least once every two months to all Government (3,065) and other accredited facilities countrywide following the pre-determined delivery schedule.

“In Financial Year 2017/18, total commodities distributed cost Shs900b to 3,065 Government health facilities. We have also been removing expired medicines,” he said.

Mr. Kamabare was making a keynote address while officiating at the event when NMS was celebrating 25 years in existence at its Head offices in Entebbe on Monday.

He said that NMS interacts with all Government health facilities individually through routine deliveries and through Customer Service Staff. Districts annually and individually constitute Basic Kits for their respective Health Centre 2 and Health Centre 3 facilities.

“National Medical Stores supplies drugs to health facilities including Regional Referral Hospitals in the whole of Uganda. We have now made 25 years since we were put in place by those who were in Parliament by 1993 through the National Medical Stores Act,” he said.

He added that all ordering facilities individually submit their essential medicines and health supplies procurement plans to NMS.

The procurement of drugs is regulated by the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets (PPDA) Act and Annual procurement audits are done by the same. Essential Medicines and Health Supplies are procured majorly by the application of the framework contracts.

He said that the operations of NMS are financed by the Government, adding, “Our service charges are currently at 8% down from 35% when it was self-financed.”
