Former Kenya President Mwai Kibaki is dead, President Uhuru Kenyatta confirmed Friday afternoon.
"It is my sorrowful duty to announce to the Nation the passing on of H.E. Emilio Mwai Kibaki," the president announced.
He was 90.
President Kenyatta ordered that the Kenyan flag to be flown at half-mast beginning Friday until Kibaki is buried.
"We remember the values by which he lived, the ideals he embraced, his dignity and diligence, his candor and concern for the well-being of all Kenyans," Uhuru said.
Kibaki, who was Kenya's third president, served from 2002 to 2013 and he was the only surviving former president.
He is survived by four children Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagi and tony Githinji.
