The Ministry of Education and Sports has asked schools to superintend performers who come to their schools, following growing incidents of semi-nude artistes recorded performing to high school students.

In an August 1 letter sent to school administrators, the ministry cited the video of the singer Winnie Nwagi performing at St. Mary's College Kisubi in 2019.

The video recently went viral on social media. "It is also now clear that there have been several of these totally unacceptable and offensive functions allowed in schools in the name of extracurricular and entertainment activities," Dr. Jane Egau Okou wrote on behalf of the ministry's permanent secretary.

Adds the letter: "Extracurricular activities in school normally mean sports and games, debate clubs, etc, If schools need to entertain themselves, then they can engage in acting plays or arrange concerts. However, inviting singers who dance erotic dances, naked in the schools in the guise of extracurricular activities must be forbidden henceforth."

That being said, guidelines on the nature and conduct of co-curricular and entertainment activities will be given to schools in the coming days.

"Everybody must always remember that Ministry of Education and Sport is the custodian of the values and behavior of the children of Uganda while at school, whether those schools are government or private schools," reads the letter.

The education ministry warned schools against hiring such performers in schools, noting that faliure to comply they'll face the weight of the law.
