IGP Hails Recent Sentencing of Notorious Women Murder Convict

The Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola has hailed the recent sentencing of one of the suspects in women murders, saying it’s a warning to other criminals and those intending to engage in criminality.

“The case and more importantly, this conviction serves as an irrefutable message to all those notorious criminals and those that aspire to participate in crime, or use it as a tool to their selfish interests, that eventually, they will be apprehended and prosecuted,” the IGP said in a message he conveyed through the police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

Ochola thanked “our partners under the criminal justice system for their exceptional work. We are pleased that they brought the accused to justice.” He also applauded the task teams from the General Crimes Department, Homicide, KMP and Kakira Division for the work done in fighting the crime and bringing to book Ibrahim Kawesa and other notorious suspects behind the violent murders of women in Kampala and Wakiso.

On September 24, the High Court in Wakiso, convicted and sentenced Kawesa to life imprisonment for the crime he committed in 2017. He was convicted of raped and murder of Annet Nakabugo. The convict raped and later strangled to death the 27 year old female victim, who was a resident of Kiteredde village, in Kakiri. This is the first out of the four cases of women murder, for which he is being held accountable.

The convict particularly targeted marginalized and vulnerable women, during lone hours, whom he abducted, raped and strangled to death. According to police, Kawesa is now pending trial in the murder of Teddy Nakachwa and Nansubuga of Nansana Division, after his DNA samples were cross linked to the two victims.

Scores of women were violently killed in Kampala and Wakiso districts in 2017. Most of the cases were registered in Nansana and Katabi town council in Wakiso district.
