Makerere University Student Drowns in Swimming Pool
By Kampala Post Reporter
A student of Makerere University on Sunday evening drowned in the university swimming pool.
Reports say, James Uwimpuhwe, a Rwandese national who is a second year Arts student drowned while attempting underwater swimming. The sorrowful incident comes barely weeks after another student of the university committed suicide by hanging in his room last month. Ashraf Nsubuga, a 4th-year student of Bio-medical Radiology, who was also a government-sponsored student was on September 29 found hanging on a rope tied on the doorway to his room at Nsimbirwa Hall Annex PAB 3.
Reports suggested that the student ended his life after losing about Sh18Million in an online marketing deal. Meanwhile Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has confirmed the drowning incident. Pro Nawangwe explained that the deceased got stuck while attempting under-water swimming. He added that efforts to save his life were futile as he died on the way to hospital.
“Life savers on duty rushed to his rescue, offered Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other first aid but he died on the way to hospital,” the Professor said on twitter. Last year, a first year student drowned in the same swimming pool after jogging with his friends.
