The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Commander of Land Forces, Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, has identified military discipline and the spirit of Pan-Africanism as the essential drivers for stability across the continent.
Lieutenant General Muhanga made the remarks during an operational visit to Ugandan troops stationed at the Awdhegeele and Barrire Forward Operating Bases in Somalia. He evaluated the combat readiness of the forces serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The General praised the soldiers for their professional conduct and their vital role in securing regional peace.
“Your professionalism and discipline continue to stand out, and your efforts remain critical in supporting the stabilisation of Somalia,” Lt Gen Muhanga said.
The Commander emphasized that Uganda’s military presence in Somalia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo stems from a shared continental duty. He noted that these efforts reflect a commitment to supporting "brothers and sisters" across borders to ensure collective security. This Pan-African approach has recently yielded significant tactical successes on the ground.
“These efforts reflect our shared continental responsibility to ensure peace and security across Africa,” he added.
Recent joint offensive operations with the Somali National Army led to the capture of several strategic towns. These include Sabii-Anole, Barrire, Awdhegeele, and the recently liberated town of Mubarak. Lt Gen Muhanga cited these gains as evidence of effective coordination and dedication to mission objectives.
Sector One Commander, Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, reminded the troops to remain alert despite these victories. He warned that the security environment remains fluid and unpredictable. He urged the personnel to maintain high levels of vigilance and follow standard operating procedures strictly.
“The situation remains fluid, and I urge you to maintain high levels of vigilance,” Brig Gen Kayanja stated.
Brigadier General Kayanja also highlighted the necessity of building trust with local communities. He noted that strong civil-military cooperation is essential for improving intelligence and ensuring peace in newly liberated areas. Battle Group 44 Commander, Colonel Owiny Akena, updated the delegation on the specific progress within his sector.
The high-level visit was attended by the AUSSOM Coordinator, military intelligence representatives, and mission partners. The inspection concluded with a reaffirmation of the UPDF’s commitment to its regional stabilization mandate.
