There is growing concern among Ugandans after the Ministry of Health announced the biggest single-day jump in coronavirus cases since the outbreak of the deadly disease in Uganda.
More concerning is that all the 11 new cases of COVID-19 announced on Thursday are all cargo transporters.
The latest cases are of six Tanzanian truck drivers who arrived via Mutukula border post and five Kenyan truck drivers; 3 arrived via Malaba and 2 arrived via Busia. Both Tanzania and Kenya have declined to declare lockdowns in their countries.
The new numbers were confirmed after clinical tests at the Uganda Virus Research Centre in Entebbe.
This brings the number of confirmed cases in Uganda to 74.
Uganda had not registered a double-figure in a single day since the outbreak. The single biggest jump was in the early days when eight Ugandan returnees from Dubai tested positive.
According to Dr Henry Mwebesa, the director-general of health services at the Ministry of Health, one case was recorded from 311 samples that were taken from the community and quarantine centres and one case was from 1,020 samples tested from truck drivers at border points of entry.
Uganda has managed to stem the spread within the country by declaring a lockdown among other measures announced by the President and the ministry of health.
It, however, remains to be seen what will be done to deal with the lurking threat of the cargo transporters who were among the few people to be allowed to access Uganda freely, albeit with Standard Operating Procedures.
