President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has given a financial boost to 623 roadside market vendors along Hoima Road, providing each with UGX 100,000 in seed capital to expand their businesses.
The support, delivered through the State House Political Department led by Princess Pauline Nassolo and Special Presidential Assistant for Women Affairs Flora Kabibi, follows complaints from vendors about being left out of key government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga.
The initiative targets traders dealing in food items and groceries who have long struggled with limited working capital.
Kakande David, Vice Chairperson of Ggobero Market traders, hailed the President’s gesture.
“This support will go a long way in expanding our businesses,” Kakande said, adding that government assistance is also needed to construct a permanent market and improve transport for produce sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
At Bukomero Parkyard Market, RDC Kiboga Ssempala Kigozi thanked the President for remembering ordinary citizens. Chapati seller Makuye Denis expressed excitement over the boost, saying it would significantly raise his daily income.
Leaders of Bukomero Daily Market commended the move, stressing that it would immediately uplift household incomes, especially for women. Vice Chairperson Abubaker Bukenya pledged continued support for the President and NRM flag bearers.
In Roma Roadside Market at Lwamata Town Council, vendors dealing in carrots, onions, and other groceries welcomed the capital injection. Market Chairperson Christine Nabasita praised the President for empowering poor families and single mothers, saying the support would ease their daily struggles.
The program is part of government efforts to strengthen grassroots economic activity and improve livelihoods for small-scale traders.
