36 Ugandans Arrested in Kenya for Alleged Subversive Activities

A group of 36 Ugandans, including three women, are currently in police custody after being apprehended in Kisumu, Kenya. The group is suspected of engaging in activities deemed subversive by Kenyan authorities.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusoke Kituuma, the police press and public relations officer, confirmed the incident. According to Kituuma, the suspects were handed over to Ugandan authorities on the night of July 24.

"They were involved in covert activities suspected to be subversive, which drew the attention of Kenyan security forces," Kituuma stated on July 29. He noted that investigations are still underway.

Kituuma emphasized the ongoing cooperation between Ugandan and Kenyan security forces in investigating the matter. "Once the inquiry is concluded, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will provide guidance, and the suspects will be presented in court. Further details will be shared at that time," he added.

The police cautioned Ugandans against participating in political protests both within and outside the country. "We discourage the practice of some political actors who are organising and facilitating individuals or groups of their supporters to travel discreetly and operate in other countries without proper authorisation," Kituuma warned.

This incident occurs amid the backdrop of significant protests in Kenya, known as the Gen Z protests, which began on June 18 in response to the controversial Finance Bill. Initially sparked by the proposed tax increases, particularly those affecting young Kenyans, the protests have since expanded to demand the resignation of President William Ruto. The protests, led by younger Kenyans, have gained traction through social media platforms such as X, TikTok, and Instagram.
