Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has ordered that all MPs and Parliament staff undergo mandatory COVID-19.

While chairing the House on Wednesday (today), Kadaga said that all MPs and staff will be tested for COVID-19 starting tomorrow, Thursday, 16 July 2020.

“Some time back the Members requested that the Ministry of Health organizes mass screening for COVID-19 and I am glad to announce that they have now completed screening the cabinet members and starting tomorrow, we should be able to do the screening here starting with the MPs then the staff,” Kadaga said, adding that the MPs will be clustered to avoid congestion at the Parliament Medical facility.

This comes after Hellen Kawunde, Kiryandondo Woman MP allegedly tested positive. On Wednesday,  Ministry of Health announced new 3 confirmed cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,043. This is the lowest number of cases (03) that Uganda has registered in a day since the pandemic hit Uganda.Apparently, she is a member of the COVID-19 Parliamentary Taskforce. The Members of the taskforce have been traversing all the border districts including the red spot of Elegu Border in Amuru district.

In a statement, Parliament says that they have no knowledge of any MP "having tested positive for COVID-19 and that parliament maintains that information relating to one's status remains a confidential issue until one chooses to reveal it."

"Additionally, if parliament was at risk, it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health to advise accordingly and to take the necessary measures, as has been the case with other incidents in the country," the statement reads.
