Six fire extinguishers were donated to Kabajjo Memorial Junior School yesterday to mark this year’s Damalie Nalwoga Day. The school is located in Kitembo village, Ssembabule district, and has been operational since 2018, with a vision of addressing the rising levels of young school dropouts in the community. Its aim is to provide quality and affordable education, as most parents are low-income peasant farmers. Notably, almost half of the school’s total population of 367 children are on either half or full scholarships, which is why it was chosen to host this year’s commemoration event.

The school caretakers and children were trained in fire prevention, safety tips, and the proper usage of fire extinguishers in case of a fire outbreak. The donated equipment was handed over to Mr. Michael Milimo Matovu, who is also the proprietor of the school.

Damalie Nalwoga was a young violinist who tragically lost her life in a fire that gutted Salaama School for the Blind in Mukono in 2022. The fire also claimed the lives of several other visually impaired young girls. Damalie was a resident of St. Lillian Children’s Home, where she was introduced to music lessons and playing musical instruments—a program initiated by the Prince Vianey Initiative at the time. "This is where we discovered that Damalie was not only a multi-talented, quick, and passionate learner but also a sweet, caring soul who always loved helping others despite her visual impairment. This made her a special child," said Prince V, whose real name is Vianey Sserubambula.

"The death of Damalie was overwhelming and painful for us to process. However, as we all know, good things often emerge from tragic incidents. The Damalie Nalwoga Fire Fighting Campaign was born, through which we donate firefighting equipment to children’s homes and schools every year in November in memory of Damalie," he added.

Damalie’s legacy will forever carry on, aiming to prevent the loss of lives in school and orphanage fires. She continues to live in the hearts of many.

Continue to rest with the angels, dear Damalie.
