Fire guts Vitafoam factory in Njeru
The structures of Vitafoam Mattress Manufacturing Company caught fire on Monday morning. It is not yet clear what caused the fire that is still ravaging one of the oldest mattress manufacturers located in Bukaya west village, Njeru central division in Njeru municipality, Buikwe district.
The fire, which is said to have started at around 9am, led to an injury of a yet to be named Indian worker at the factory who was hit by blocks falling from the building. He is currently undergoing treatment.
Vitafoam was borne out of merging Uganda Industrial Properties Ltd. and M/s Vita PLC of UK in 1975, information on its website shows.
It manufactures mattresses, pillows, baby cots and other foam products, which are sold government institutions to hotels, colleges, dealers, dormitories, and private individuals.
The company has outlets in Masaka, Kampala, Mbarara, Gulu and Entebbe.
Police and UPDF have deployed at the factory to help put out the fire. The unfortunate incident comes days after Makerere University's main building was destroyed by a fire whose origin is still unclear.
