The Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations and Commander Land Forces, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has paid all the bills for the Uganda national basketball team that was participating in the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda.
In a tweet earlier today, Gen Kainerugaba tweeted about the performance of the team, noting that they would do better in the future.
"Our great basketball players have demonstrated the hearts of warriors. We are very proud of the #SilverBacks for reaching the quarterfinals of #Afrobasketball2021. We shall continue to improve! Godbless Uganda!" Gen Kainerugaba tweeted.
Federation of Uganda Basketball Association President Nasser Sserunjoji confirmed the payments noting that Gen Kainerugaba had personally given the team sh188m to settle hotel bills.
“The Silverbacks men’s team would like to thank Gen. Kainerugaba for coming to the rescue of the National Basketball team in Kigali. Gen Kainerugaba has paid all our hotel bills and has personally ensured we leave Kigali with no credit. We thank you for loving and supporting Basketball.”
In a statement released on Friday, Sserunjoji denied allegations that the team had been detained over the bills and noted that they were staying at the Park in Radisson Hotel and they had been treated extremely well.
Uganda reached the quarter-finals of the AfroBasket 2021 tournament in Rwanda, where they were beaten yesterday by Cape Verde. To reach this stage, Uganda had upset Nigeria.
