The restoration of the Karuma Bridge is nearing completion, with progress made in recent months. The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) reported that the installation of formwork for the new concrete deck is now 80% complete. This brings the bridge closer to its reopening, which is expected to occur before Christmas of 2024.

“The new deck casting exercise is currently underway, following the demolition of the old concrete deck,” said Eng. Lawrence Pario, UNRA's head of bridges and structures. “Once the formwork is finished, we will install steel beams and pour concrete.”

The restoration project became necessary after engineers discovered structural defects in the bridge. The bridge was built in 1962. To ensure the safety of road users, authorities imposed restrictions on heavy vehicles and rerouted traffic through Murchison Falls National Park.

According to UNRA, the completed bridge will offer improved safety, durability, and efficiency for both passenger and commercial vehicles. It will also facilitate smoother transportation and economic activity in northern Uganda.

Eng. Pario noted that UNRA remains committed to delivering the project on time and to the highest standards.
