OYAM. Another accident has occurred on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, leaving ten hospitalized. A Pajero Reg. No. UAW 260Q coming from Gulu collided head on with a Double Cabin Reg. No. UAR436Y heading to Gulu town.
Patrick Onyango, the Deputy Police Spokesperson says the accident occurred at Minakulu village in Oyam district on Monday at around Midday.
“Driver of UAW 260Q Okot Christopher, passengers; Omony Oscar, Atimango Denis, Joyce and Esther Litesi were all rushed to Gulu Independent Hospital while victims from UAR 436Y Double Cabin were rushed to St Mary's Hospital Lacor,” Onyango told Kampala Post.
He identified the victims in the Double Cabin as, Godfrey Ojok 30 years old, Denis Jagenda 32 years old, Silver Osimai 28 years, Patrick Omara 45 years old and John Rogers Matovu 30 yrs.
Onyango attributes the accident to reckless driving.
This is the third accident on the same road in less than two weeks. A fatal one was registered a week ago involving a Gaaga Bus, a lorry and a tractor. 23 people died while several others were hospitalized.
Last Wednesday morning, Erute North Member of Parliament, Charles Angiro Guttmoi involved in a motor accident on the same road, just after Karuma Bridge in Kiryandongo district.
Last Monday, cabinet approved stringent measures to curb road carnage following the Gaaga Bus accident. Among the new measures is installation of digital speed limiters in all commercial vehicles and licensing of all goods vehicles requiring such vehicles to meet certain regulatory requirements, among them inspection for road worthiness among others.
Police have also scaled up presence on major highways, with several check points being mounted on road.
