Uganda Airlines Expands Reach to African Cities with New Routes
Uganda Airlines has marked its fifth anniversary by launching its 15th and 16th destinations on September 24, with the inaugural flight UR720 to Harare landing to a warm welcome, water cannon salutes, and jubilation at both Kenneth Kaunda and Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airports.
The flight carried a Ugandan delegation led by Finance Minister Matia Kasaija and was received in Lusaka by Zambia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Museba Frank Tayali. Before take-off, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Zambia, Amb. Col (Rtd) Fred Mwesigye, highlighted that the new route strengthens historical ties between the three nations and fosters social, cultural, and business exchange.
In his remarks, Kasaija underscored the importance of "Africanisation" to promote unity and economic growth across the continent. He expressed optimism that improved air connectivity would lead to a vibrant travel market, facilitating trade, tourism, and business between Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
In Lusaka, Minister Tayali welcomed the airline's arrival as a key milestone for Zambia’s aviation sector and recognized Uganda as a vital partner in trade and economic development. “The commencement of flights will enhance existing business links and open opportunities for tourism, trade, and foreign investments,” he said.
High Commissioners Paul Amoru (Uganda) and Winpeg Moyo (Zimbabwe) echoed similar sentiments in Harare, noting that the new route supports people-to-people connections and regional integration within the East African Community and Southern African Development Community.
Uganda Airlines CEO, Jenifer Bamuturaki, emphasized the airline's commitment to increasing travel options across Africa, offering safe, affordable, and reliable air transport services. The new EBB-LUN-HRE route will operate four times a week, connecting travelers not only to Zambia and Zimbabwe but also to other network destinations including Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Bujumbura, Dubai, Mogadishu, Johannesburg, Mombasa, Mumbai, Lagos, Abuja, Juba, and Kinshasa.
