Uganda Captivates China with Cultural Showcase and Tourism Pitch
Uganda’s tourism and cultural appeal captivated thousands in China during the “Explore Uganda” Independence celebrations, hosted by the Uganda Embassy in Beijing and the Consulate General in Guangzhou. Held on October 12 and 13, 2024, the events aimed to spotlight Uganda’s tourism potential and strengthen ties between Uganda and China.
The celebrations kicked off at Beijing's prestigious Kempinski Hotel, with over 300 guests in attendance. HE Amb Xue Bing, the Special Envoy for Eastern Horn of Africa, was the guest of honor. Addressing the audience, Ambassador Oliver Wonekha highlighted Uganda’s unmatched natural beauty. “Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, offers experiences unlike anywhere else,” she said, promoting Uganda as an ideal destination for Chinese tourists seeking adventure, culture, and relaxation.
Cultural performances and an immersive showcase of Uganda’s renowned attractions, including Murchison Falls and Lake Victoria, mesmerized the guests. Ambassador Judyth Nsababera, Consul General in Guangzhou, stressed the importance of strengthening economic ties through tourism and investment. “Uganda holds vast potential—not only as a tourist destination but also as a growing hub for investment in sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing, and mineral value addition,” she remarked.
On October 13, Uganda’s showcase took center stage at the iconic Great Wall of China’s Badaling section, attracting thousands of tourists with Ugandan cultural performances and a visually stunning branded booth promoting key tourist sites and coffee. Samples of Uganda’s premium coffee and branded souvenirs further underscored Uganda’s growing presence in the Chinese market.
These back-to-back events, part of the “Explore Uganda” campaign, underscored the critical role of tourism and coffee exports in Uganda’s economic transformation. Ambassador Wonekha emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between Uganda and China, saying, “Together, we can build a prosperous future that benefits both Uganda and China.”
The success of these events is expected to boost Chinese tourist arrivals and strengthen trade and investment between the two nations.
