Uganda is gearing up to host the Second Summit of the Nile River Basin Heads of State and Government on 17th October 2024, a gathering that could reshape water resource management in the region. This summit, chaired by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, comes at a critical time as the Nile Basin Initiative moves toward formalizing its cooperative efforts.

During a briefing recently, Hon. John Mulimba, Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, addressed Ambassadors and High Commissioners from Nile Basin member and observer states, providing an update on the preparations for the upcoming summit. This significant event will see the launch of the Nile River Basin Commission, as outlined in the Cooperation Framework Agreement (CFA), marking a new phase of cooperative water management across the 11-member states.

"Uganda is committed to ensuring the success of this summit, which will usher in a new era of cooperation and sustainable development for the Nile Basin," Mulimba stated. Uganda currently holds the chairmanship of the Nile Basin Initiative, a position it will retain until June 2025.

This summit follows the historic ratification of the CFA, which officially comes into force on 13th October 2024. The agreement aims to promote equitable water resource management and regional prosperity, with South Sudan becoming the sixth nation to ratify it in August.

The gathering will begin with a joint session of Foreign and Water Affairs Ministers on 16th October, setting the stage for the Heads of State to discuss key priorities, including the Nile River Basin Investment Program. The summit is anticipated to foster continued engagement among riparian countries, furthering dialogue on water security, resource sharing, and economic development.

Uganda’s leadership in this initiative highlights the country’s ongoing efforts to promote regional cooperation, ensuring that water resources are managed sustainably for the benefit of all Nile Basin nations.
