WHO Pledges Support to Uganda in Fight Against Monkeypox

The World Health Organization (WHO) has allocated funds to assist Uganda in controlling a recent monkeypox outbreak, which first surfaced in July 2024 in Kasese District. Uganda confirmed its initial cases on July 24, detected through surveillance at Bwera Hospital by the Uganda Virus Research Institute. Since then, 164 cases and one death have been reported.

“We have earmarked funds to combat epidemics like this, but we urge the government to collaborate with us in curbing the spread,” Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, WHO’s Deputy Director General for Health Emergencies said, emphasizing the need for joint action to contain the virus. Dr. Chikwe, arrived in Uganda to assess the outbreak and coordinate response strategies with health officials.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who met with Dr. Chikwe in Kampala, urged WHO to encourage neighboring countries to take action against the virus to prevent further regional spread. “As WHO, you should make sure neighboring countries implement measures to control the epidemic so we can defeat it together,” she noted.
