The Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations and Commander Land Forces Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has welcomed the planned reopening of the Uganda-Rwanda border that has been closed since 2019.

Last week, the Rwandan foreign affairs ministry issued a statement, announcing that the border would be opened from January 31 (Today).

The statement noted that following Gen Kainerugaba's talks with Mr Kagame, the leadership in Kigali had noted that there were practical efforts to address their concerns.

The announcement followed a meeting between Gen Kainerugaba and Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Kigali.

In a tweet Monday morning, Gen Kainerugaba said that the citizens of the two sister countries can now interact as God has always intended.

"I thank our great leaders, President @KagutaMuseveni and @PaulKagame for fully opening our borders! This is a wonderful achievement. Now our people can freely move, trade and interact as Almighty God always intended! God bless East Africa!" Gen Kainerugaba said in his tweet.

Earlier, Gen Kainerugaba who has received acclaim for his efforts to normalize relations between Uganda and Rwanda thanked President Yoweri Museveni and his Rwandan counterpart.

"These are still my heroes! Ugarwa... shall still prevail!" Gen Kainerugaba said in a tweet attached to the two Presidents' photos.

Meanwhile, the Kampala Post understands that following the announcement to reopen, trafic had start to flow freely between the countries through Katuna border.
