The government has reiterated its commitment to the continued implementation of key projects under the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U), despite the ongoing rationalization process of Government Agencies.

In response to concerns raised by Hon. Tom Alero regarding the progress of the national backbone infrastructure connectivity and e-government infrastructure projects, the Government Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, assured the House that NITA-U would be granted a three-year transitional period to complete these initiatives.

Obua clarified that while NITA-U was initially slated for rationalization, it was identified as one of two organizations that would benefit from a grace period. He emphasized that the rationalization bills would be presented to Parliament for consideration and approval, ensuring a smooth transition for NITA-U's ongoing projects.

Hon. Alero had inquired about the status of the connectivity project in West Nile, which was launched by President Yoweri Museveni in May 2019. He also expressed concerns about the lack of internet connectivity in remote areas of the region.

In response, Obua confirmed that the government had secured loan provisions from EXIM Bank and the World Bank to implement phase five of the connectivity project. He further assured the House that the project would eventually extend to remote areas, ensuring that all parts of West Nile have access to internet connectivity.

The Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, directed the Minister for ICT and National Guidance to provide an update to Parliament on the areas to be covered by the national backbone infrastructure connectivity project. The House Committee on ICT and National Guidance will also follow up on the matter.
