Makerere University Strengthens Ties with Canadian University

Makerere University welcomed a high-level delegation from Western University, Ontario, Canada, led by President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Alan Shepard. The visit, which spanned a week, marked a crucial milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance partnerships between the two prestigious institutions.

Accompanied by key figures including Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Dr. Lily Cho, Associate Vice-President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Dr. Opiyo Oloya, and Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry Dr. John Yoo, the delegation engaged in fruitful discussions across various colleges, departments, and units within Makerere University. These interactions unearthed numerous areas of mutual interest and laid the groundwork for potential collaborative ventures.

A highlight of the visit was the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), set to fortify the existing relationship between the two universities. The talks, led by Makerere University's Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and the university management, revolved around opportunities for collaboration in fields such as engineering, design, and technology. There was a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange, aiming to leverage the strengths of both institutions for mutual benefit.

Opio Oloya discussed the crucial topics of inclusivity and diversity within academia, stressing the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge systems, addressing global anti-blackness, and fostering social integration within the university communities.

The meetings showcased Makerere University's dedication to academic excellence and capacity building. Initiatives to broaden graduate training opportunities and facilitate student and faculty exchanges were discussed, underscoring a commitment to enhancing academic capacity and excellence.

The dialogue extended to the School of Law, where Associate Prof. Ronald Naluwairo led discussions on academic collaboration, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in academia. The focus was on joint research opportunities, staff and student mobility programs, and a shared commitment to academic excellence and cross-cultural learning.

A particularly poignant meeting took place at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), where Executive Director Dr. Andrew Kambugu highlighted the institute’s growth from an academic venture to a leading institution in service delivery, research, and capacity building in Africa. President Alan Shepard of Western University emphasized the significant impact of existing partnerships, particularly in data management, showcasing the tangible outcomes of international collaboration.

The visit concluded with a farewell luncheon hosted by Mrs. Lorna Magara, Chairperson of the Makerere University Council, celebrating the enduring spirit of friendship and cooperation between the two universities. As the delegation from Western University returned home, they carried with them cherished memories and a renewed commitment to furthering the partnership, emphasizing the transformative power of collaboration across borders.
