Museveni Pledges Protection of Uganda's Lakes
President Yoweri Museveni has announced new government initiatives to safeguard Uganda’s lakes, emphasizing the need for sustainable fish production. “A lake is a common property for all Ugandans,” Museveni remarked, urging for responsible fishing practices across the country. The President spoke at a recent gathering with ministers, officials, and stakeholders at State House, Entebbe, to discuss measures against illegal fishing.
Museveni highlighted the deployment of advanced radars and upgraded monitoring systems to ensure effective lake surveillance. The President also called for digital boat identification and bi-monthly public feedback meetings to monitor enforcement efforts.
He noted that local communities would play a central role in managing resources sustainably and protecting wetlands.
Acting Fisheries Commissioner Joseph Bwanika acknowledged the sector’s economic importance, noting its contribution to national GDP and its role in food security and employment.
Attendees included First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, Minister of Agriculture Frank Tumwebaze, and Minister of State for Fisheries Hellen Adoa, among others.
