The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) said it will suspend operations at its head office as the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds (Kololo Airstrip), where the facility is located will be used for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday.

According to NIRA, the office will be closed for two days.

“In consideration of the importance of the event at national level, it has been considered prudent that NIRA suspends its operations, on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th May 2021 to allow for smooth preparations and management of the event,” reads an official statement.

“Consequently, operations at the NIRA offices at Kololo will be suspended on the above-indicated dates.”

The Authority issues a number of documents, including the National ID, birth and death certificates.

As the Kololo office closes, NIRA says people in the meantime continue accessing National Identification (NID) services including registration and issuance of cards normally through the offices in the respective Divisions of Kampala.

“Birth and death registration services including dropping off forms and picking completed certificates shall continue to be provided at the NIRA Division offices and through our service desk at the One-Stop Centre on 1st floor Georgian House (former Amamu House) on George Street,” the statement says.

“All other NIRA District Offices shall continue to operate normally.”

The office will re-open on Thursday. President Museveni won the Feb. 14 election with 58.64%, beating 10 other candidates, including the closest challenger, Bobi Wine, who had 34.83%.

The swearing-in theme is 'Securing the Future, and the event will start at 7am.
