Uganda, DR Congo Seek to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation
Uganda and its western neighbor Democratic Republic Congo will today sign a number of agreements aimed at deepening relations between Kampala and Kinshasa.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Christophe Lutundula Apala, DRC’s deputy prime minister and minister of Foreign Affairs is expected in Uganda for a two-day visit and he’ll be accompanied by a delegation of ministers and senior government officials.
Apala and his team will be at State House, Entebbe Thursday and Friday and one of the agreements to be signed is on infrastructure, according to the presidential press secretary Linda Nabusayi.
Uganda's cabinet last year approved plans to build three roads inside the DRC.
Jointly funded by the two countries, the roads will run from some of Uganda's border towns into DRC: one will run from Kasindi to Beni (80km) and another will integrate the Beni-Butebo axis (54km). The third will stretch for 89 kilometres from the border town of Bunagana, through Rutshuru to the strategic city of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu Province in DRC.
According to the foreign affairs ministry, “the main purpose of this visit is to further bolster the cordial bilateral relations and deepen cooperation between the Republic of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).”
“This is a follow up on the Implementation of the decisions of the Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) and Joint Communiqué which was signed during the State visit to Uganda by H.E Felix Antoine Tshisekedi TSHILOMBO, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from 9th -10th November 2019,” the ministry said.
