The Ugandan Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and South Africa's Lt Gen Mulangi Mphego on Saturday held discussions regarding regional security with an emphasis on the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.

The meeting took place in Entebbe where Lt Gen Mulangi who is the Special Advisor to the Deputy President of South Africa paid a courtesy call on his Ugandan counterpart.

The South African General was head of intelligence during former president Thabo Mbeki’s tenure.

Gen Kainerugaba tweeted after the private meeting. "Today, it was my pleasure to meet and discuss with Lt.General Mulangi Mphego, Special Advisor to the Deputy President of South Africa. He paid me a courtesy call."

Last November, a Tripartite Summit of the Heads of State of Uganda, Sudan and South Sudan at State House, Entebbe on the revitalized Agreement on Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan agreed to extend the Pre-Transitional period for one hundred days effective 12th November 2019. This was aimed at  mong others, handle the incomplete critical tasks related to the security arrangements, including the formation of a revitalized transitional government of National Unity.

Both Uganda and South Africa have been active partners of South Sudan since the young country's formation as an independent state on July 12 2011.

The meeting between the two Generals, therefore, only serves to emphasize the continued support by Uganda and South Africa towards South Sudan.

It is also important to note that South Africa and Uganda enjoy a cordial relationship as far as security matters are concerned with both countries sharing a historic relationship in terms of fighting liberation struggles.

The two countries also conduct joint training of both UPDF and South African National Defence Forces (SANDF) soldiers.

Gen Kainerugaba completed the training in 2012 while at the rank of Colonel then.
