IGG Probe on Bank of Uganda Bosses’ Wealth Kicks Off

The Inspectorate of Government has kicked off the probe on the wealth of Bank of Uganda (BoU) top bosses.

According to sources, the IGG Irene Mulyagonja last month located at least two inspectorate officers to over 100 BoU bosses.

Among the top officers whose wealth is under investigation include; the Governor Emmanuel Mutebile, his deputy Louis Kasekende and others.

In accordance with the Leadership Code Act 2002, all public servants and leader are required to declare their wealth to the IGG.

In a letter dated October 18 addressed to Kasekende, the IGG’s wealth verification exercise “shall commence within 7 days from the date.” The exercise which ended on October 25, will then commence with IGG verifying the information submitted by the officers. Victor Acidir, a senior principal inspectorate officer and Doreen Tusiime, an inspectorate officers are the officers who spearheaded the verification exercise on Kasekende’s wealth.

According to a source, the wealth verification exercise on other senior BoU officials is still ongoing up to December this year.  

This wealth probe comes after Kasekende’s wealth leaked to the public showing that the deputy governor who earns a salary of Shs45m per month and Shs13m allowance has multi-billion properties in leafy suburbs of Kampala and Wakiso districts.

In his Declaration of Income, Assets and Liabilities form presented to the IGG, Kasekende revealed that he is the rightful owner of Plot 3 Gaba Close valued at Shs2.1bn, Plot 1475, Lubowa Est in Wakiso (Shs2bn), Plot 12 Corporation Rd, Ntinda (Shs390m), Plot 2 Bukoto Rise, Naguru (Shs1.3bn), Plot 2B Makindo Lane, Kololo (Shs2bn) and Buloba plot 706 Block 314 (Shs500m).

With the exception of Buloba plot which contains his residential home, Kasekende has built commercial houses on each of his plots of land all valued at Shs7.69bn.

In his declaration form, Kasekende also added that he collects rent of up to $13,233 (about Shs50m) per month.
