Local NGO Bosses Using American Senators to Harm Uganda-US Relations

After years of working to tarnish Uganda's image in various ways, some NGO bosses in the country are now desperately reaching out to a few US Senators to try and negatively influence Uganda-US relations, this website has learnt.

According to highly placed security sources, NGO bosses including Nicholas Opiyo and Godber Tumushabe have tirelessly been asking some US Senators to alter the good bilateral relations between Uganda and the United States.

Uganda and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1962 following Uganda’s formal independence from the United Kingdom.

The two countries have been reliable partners in promoting stability in the Horn and East/Central Africa and in combatting terror, particularly through Uganda's contribution to the African Union Mission in Somalia among others.

However, having worked so hard to change this over the years, Tumushabe and Opiyo and others working with external agents such as Rwandan external security agents in the US like Leonce Byimana have brokered a letter authored by two US Senators including Cory A. Booker and James E. Risch.

"Byimana represents probably the most brutal government in African history in terms of human rights but has the audacity to comment on Uganda," a security source that preferred anonymity remarked.

The letter dated March 4 and addressed to the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken implores Mr. Blinken to use his position to among other things review the Uganda-US relationship especially by cutting off non-humanitarian assistance to Uganda.

The two Senators also ask Mr. Blinken to designate some Ugandan government officials whom they claim to have been involved in human rights violations. 

They also ask the State Department to 'appropriately support the activities of NGOs in Uganda. It should be remembered that several NGOs have been found to be involved in subversive activities against the government of Uganda.

Their biggest funder, DGF has since been suspended and its activities halted by the government until further notice.
