Police in Kampala have arrested one of the men captured by CCTV cameras killing a bodaboda cyclist and robbing his motorcycle.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango identifies the suspect as Johnbosco Mugisha, alias Mukiga. Onyango says Mukiga was arrested on Tuesday evening at Nsiike 1, Ndeeba in Rubaga Division, after residents tipped off the police.

According to police the suspect has confessed to the gruesome killing of the bodaboda cyclist Derrick Mulindwa, together with his accomplice Young Mulo on June 30. “Mukiga admits that he is the one in the video with his colleague Young Mulo (not the musician) He confessed that Young Mulo was killed by a mob on July 3 in Makindye, on suspicion that they had stolen a motorcycle,” Onyango explains in a statement.

The two men pretending to be customers, turned against the cyclist at a solitary point in Kakeeka Zone, Rubaga Division, in Kampala district. The horrible incident was captured on the CCTV cameras of a nearby nursery and primary school. The killers strangled their victim before they shuttered his head with a hummer.

In a CCTV footage shared by the police, the unsuspecting cyclist was seen stopping, as if to drop his two passengers only for one to grab him by the neck from behind and strangling him. As he threw the helpless victim on the ground, his colleague held the motorcycle and made it to stand, before joining in the murder by picking what appeared to be a hummer and repeatedly hitting the cyclist hard on the head. The two later took off with the motorcycle.

With footage of the gruesome incident widely shared online, some people have since been trying to identify the killers. Onyango explains that according to the suspect, they had robbed the latest motorcycle from Mityana on July 2, “but they were traced up to Makindye in Kampala, where the mob killed his colleague.”

Mugisha claims that he escaped that day and ran to Kabale, where he has been in hiding. The police say the suspect is a serial criminal who has been in and out of jail. “Mugisha has been arrested several times and he has been to Luzira prisons many times on robbery cases,” Onyango said. He is currently detained at Katwe police station pending transfer to Old Kampala Police station on murder and aggravated robbery charges.
