President Yoweri Museveni has mourned the death of the Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash this week.

Museveni eulogised Raisi as a dedicated worker and unifier for his country.

"When he visited us recently, we finished the government bilateral functions late, as dusk was gathering. However, he insisted on going to the suburbs at night to visit the pro-people projects Iran had constructed. From there, at night,  H.E Raisi, a Shia, visited Old Kampala mosque which belongs to the Sunni sect," Museveni said.

He added," I could see a patriot in His Excellency. It is a pity he died prematurely. May his soul rest in eternal peace."

President Raisi visited Uganda in July 2023, where he signed four cooperative agreements with President Museveni to strengthen ties between the two nations.

These agreements covered visa waivers, agricultural cooperation, the establishment of a joint permanent intergovernmental commission

Raisi became president in a historically uncompetitive election in 2021. Previously the country’s chief justice, he has overseen a period of intensified repression of dissent, according to human rights monitors.
