Lato Milk

The government of Kenya has temporarily lifted the ban on the importation of milk powder, which had raised tension among Ugandan traders.

The Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Hon. Frank Tumwebaze last week flagged off 50 tonnes of Lato milk to Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Zambia.

Uganda collected $205 million (about Shs730 billion) from exporting milk products in 2020, according to the Dairy Development Authority (DDA).

DDA Executive Director Dr. Michael Kansiime says this is an increase from the $131.5m (Shs 466bn) picked up from the sector in 2018.

Farmers in the Western districts of Kiruhura, Mbarara, Ibanda, Bushenyi and other districts in the cattle corridor have asked the government to find them an all-year-round stable market for milk to protect the dairy sector from collapsing.
