DPP Drops Fraud, Kidnap Charges against Bakaleke

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has dropped kidnap and fraud charges involving sh1.5b against Assistant Commissioner of Police Siraje Bakaleke.
ACP Bakaleke, the former Kampala South Regional Police Commander is jointly charged with six other senior police officers; Robert Munezero, 31; Innocent Nuwagaba, 32; Robert Ray Asiimwe, 37; Junior Amanya, 28; Gustavus Babu, 27 and Kenneth Zirintusa, 26.
Others include city lawyer Paul Wanyoto Mugoya and businessman Samuel Mulowooza Nabeta. On Monday, when the case came up for mention, state prosecutor Harriet Angom informed the court that the DPP has decided to discontinue proceedings against the accused persons.
“This is to inform the court that DPP has decided to discontinue proceedings against the accused persons,” she told the court. Prosecution alleges that Bakaleke and his co-accused, between February 4 and 11, 2018 in Kampala, while employed in the Uganda Police Force in various ranks and appointments did or directed to be done arbitrary acts, prejudicial to the interests of their employer or of a one Jang Seungkwon, a South Korean national, in abuse of the authority of their offices, by causing the said Jang to be wrongfully arrested and confined.
DPP’s decision to drop the charges against Bakaleke and his co-accused, comes barely three months after the anti- corruption court for the fourth time extended a warrant of arrest against the fugitive former regional police commander in February this year.
