Kampala Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga is dead.

His Grace Dr. Lwanga was reportedly found dead in his room this morning, according to a statement released by Fr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese.

"With deep sorrow, I hereby inform you that our beloved Shepherd, the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, His Grace, Dr. Cyprian Lwanga has been called to the house of the Lord. The Archbishop was found dead in his room this morning. We pray that the Almighty and Merciful God may grant him eternal rest," the statement reads.

Lwanga was last seen on Friday at Namirembe Cathedral where he conducted mass to celebrate Good Friday, a holy day to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Born on 19 January 1953, Dr. Lwanga was appointed as Archbishop of Kampala on 19 August 2006, succeeding Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, who resigned.

Fr. Ssentumbwe said that further arrangements will be communicated later.
