UPDF Launches Forceful Disarmament in Karamoja

The joint security forces, with UPDF as a lead agency, on 17 November 2021, extended the disarmament exercise upon criminals with illegal guns in Karamoja sub - region for another three (03) months.

The Commander of the UPDF 3 Infantry Division and chairperson of the disarmament exercise, code named " Usalama Kwa Wote" loosely translated to mean "Peace for All" Brig Gen Joseph Balikudembe revealed this while meeting journalists at Nadunget detach in Moroto district.

He however noted that the new phase of disarmament will mainly be forceful, involving cordon and search operations, and those found with illegal guns will be prosecuted.

Brig Gen Balikudembe remarked that the operation to secure Karamoja has been beefed up with more troops, 02 helicopters, K9 police dogs and armored vehicles, among others.

He commended local leaders and residents for sharing intelligence information about criminal acts with the joint security teams.

The first phase of the operation that started on 13 July 2021 has seen the recovery of 105 guns, 1046 Rounds of Ammunition, 7726 animals have been recovered and handed over to the rightful owners, and about 350 criminals have been convicted and sentenced.

During the same meeting, the Deputy Commandant of the Anti-Stock Safety Unit (ASTU) SP Latif Zaake highlighted how joint security forces have reinforced the guidelines regarding livestock movement to stop theft. He added that sensitization programs on the requirements for the legal acquisition of livestock are on-going.

The meeting also revealed that the districts of Kotido, Kaabong, Moroto, Nabilatuk and Napak, respectively had the most criminals.

The meeting was also attended by UPDF Senior and Junior Officers.
