Museveni Arrives in Kenya ahead of Meeting to Discuss DRC Conflict
President Yoweri Museveni on Monday morning arrived in Nairobi for a meeting convened by his Kenyan counterpart and EAC Chairman Uhuru Kenyatta to discuss the security situation in DRC.
"I have arrived in Nairobi, Kenya for the 3rd East African Community (EAC) Heads of State Conclave on the peace and security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)," Museveni tweeted early morning.
The meeting, which is expected to be attended by leaders from Kenya, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda, is aimed promoting dialogue between rebels and the Congolese government.
In a statement announcing the meeting, Kenyatta said the eastern DRC has "long suffered and continue to pay an inordinately heavy price in loss of lives, property and elusive peace."
The meeting comes as heavy fighting revives decades-old animosities between Kinshasa and Kigali, with the DRC blaming neighbouring Rwanda for the recent resurgence of the M23 rebel group.
Kigali has repeatedly denied supporting the rebels and both countries have accused each other of cross-border attacks.
Last week Kenyatta called for the deployment of a regional EAC force in eastern DRC to restore peace, but Kinshasa said it would not accept Rwanda's participation in the operation.
