Gen. Kainerugaba Urges Ssebei on Environmental Conservation, Hails Sports Giants from the Region
Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba called upon the people of the Greater Ssebei Region to champion environmental conservation in order to fully harness natural resources in the area.
Gen. Kainerugaba said that while "conserving the environment jealously", they should also take "full advantage of government wealth creation programmes such as in agriculture and tourism to support themselves and their families."
He pointed out some of the resourceful sectors in the region that are yet to be fully exploited. "Finally, and perhaps even most importantly, I want to point out that Kapchorwa and Ssebei region is one of immense potential, which if exploited correctly could herald the historical transformation and growth of our people starting here, and eventually to the rest of the country. I know that you produce the best wheat, best Irish potatoes, onions, and other crops," the General said on Saturday while speaking to masses that had gathered at Boma Grounds in Kapchorwa for a function that included a tree planting exercise.
"But for you to continue reaping from Mother Earth, we must take seriously conserving what God blessed us with – the environment. We must avoid eroding the terrain which can have catastrophic consequences like we have witnessed in other areas. We can plant more trees, avoid polluting the environment with waste, keep our water sources clean, and engage in modern agricultural practices."
Gen. Kainerugaba also paid tribute to sports giants that hail from the region, urging residents to look forward to optimising the Teryet National High Altitude Training Centre when it's finally complete. "Ladies and gentlemen, there is no doubt that the people of Ssebei, in Kapchorwa, in Kween, and in Bukwo (districts), are one of the greatest and most loyal citizens this country is blessed to have. For instance, some of the greatest talents and sports stars this country has ever produced hail from here, world beaters that have truly marketed this country in the most glorious ways to the furthest reaches of the earth," he said.
"I would like to, particularly thank and applaud our global champions Joshua Cheptegei (reigning Olympic Champion and World Record Holder over the 10,000m and 5000m distances), Jacob Kiplimo (reigning Commonwealth Games champion over the 10,000m and 5000m distances), Olympic Champions Peruth Chemutai and Steven Kiprotich, Stella Chesang, a gold medalist in the 10,000 metres at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and Moses Kipsiro, a 2010 Commonwealth Games 5,000 metres gold medalist," he went on.
"I know there are many others I have not mentioned here, but who have similarly performed brilliantly and raised high the name of Uganda. Now that the long-overdue Teryet National High Altitude Training Centre is finally nearing completion, the sky will not be the limit for our elite athletes on the global stage going into the future. "
The senior presidential advisor reiterated his commitment to support the sports sector and hailed the region for its continued support for President Yoweri Museveni. "Personally, I have pledged before and reiterate that I will actively support the growth of our sports infrastructure and industry in the country, and there is in fact no better starting point than this one here in Kapchorwa, in Ssebei region, the land of Champions," he said.
"I also in a special way wish to thank the people of Ssebei for overwhelmingly supporting Mzee Museveni all these years, this we cannot and will never take it for granted. Let’s continue to build on this firm support base to galvanize and transform our people even further so that they achieve their lifetime dreams."
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba held a meeting with leaders from the region and promised to share the challenges discussed with President Museveni. He also thanked the coordinators of the event who include MK Army Brigade in Ssebei, Chief coordinator Twala Fadhir, Deputy coordinator Emma Rose Cherukut (Woman MP Kween district) and Phyllis Chemutai (Woman MP Kapchorwa).
He also noted the presence of MK Army Brigade Chairman Micheal Mawanda and the national vice chairman Balaam Barugahara, and all the supporters that turned up for the event. The Commander of the UPDF 3 Infantry Division Brig. Joseph Balikuddembe and his deputy, Brig. Felix Busizoori also attended.
