7 Arrested for dealing in Fake Dollars
A gang of seven people have been arrested for theft and dealing in fake dollars.
According to Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, the suspects have been exchanging counterfeit dollars and fleecing the public in Lira City.
The suspects include; Odur Joshua, Odongo Denish, Ogwang Geoffrey, Akite Nancy, Atim Collin and Aguti Eunice.
"Additionally, another 10 members of the racket were arrested after they attacked and harassed the LC1 Chairman of Ober Kampala Cell, after he tipped Police," Enanga said.
In a separate development, the territorial police in Bukedi South and Busia district, has in custody a businessman, identified as Mukunja Noah alias Ochieng, aged 54, from Nangwe village, in Busia Municipality after supplying fake dollars in a transaction of Shs150 million that he had received from Hassan Ahmed Omar, a money changer, in Busia municipality.
"The two business persons had entered into a financial transaction, on 27th September 2023, at around 11am, at customs road, to exchange USD 90,000 into Shs328,500,000. As a result, the suspect was advanced Shs150 million, but instead brought fake dollars, in exchange,"Enanga added.
The metallic box with counterfeit dollars was recovered and suspect arrested.
"We continue to remain committed in fighting counterfeit and fake currency dealers, on all streets. These arrests and successful recoveries of counterfeit dollar, should act as a warning to other rogue business persons, that we will pursue them and have them charged to court," he said.
