The Police have launched an investigation into the death of Fire Base Crew member and People Power supporter Michael Kalinda aka Ziggy Wine.

The 30-year-old died on Sunday days after the disappearance and alleged torture. Ziggy Wine was reported missing on July 27, only to be traced at Mulago national referral hospital where he was reportedly dumped by unknown people, while unconscious. He had a fractured skull and fingers to his right hand were cut.

Postmortem findings point to blunt force trauma to the head as the cause of death. Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says they have constituted a task team, which is working with the management of Mulago hospital to investigate circumstances surrounding his death. “The task team is working with the management of the National Referral Hospital, and reviewing the CCTV footage from 3/08/2019. And tracing backwards for any images that could reveal how the victim was brought and abandoned at the hospital,” he said.

He added that the police are also working with the immediate family members to verify claims of “Be Careful” threats on phone against the deceased. “We continue to take all allegations of threats to life seriously and our detectives have started putting the pieces together. At this stage, the motivation to the murder is not yet established,” Enanga said warning “all political actors, journalists, activists, theorists and members of the public” against speculating about the murder.

Meanwhile, as police investigate Ziggy Wine’s death, reports within the People Power inner circle point to rifts within the political movement over funds, as the probable cause of the young man’s murder.
