Pilgrims from neighboring countries and various districts have started arriving in Namugongo in preparation for Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, no crime or safety incidents have been reported so far.

ASP Owoyesigyire mentioned that pilgrims are making their way to Kampala on foot, with police ensuring their safety. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has directed all territorial commanders to secure the pilgrims within their areas. Pilgrims are being escorted and protected at churches, schools, and community centers where they rest.

Movements are restricted during the night and early morning to prevent road accidents and identify those needing medical attention. Police and Ministry of Health ambulances are stationed on all major highways and at Namugongo for emergency response.

Pilgrims have been advised to stay with their groups and draw strength from their spiritual journey. They are also urged to carry warm clothing, IDs, mobile phones, light bags, reflectors, and to make transport arrangements for their return due to unpredictable weather.

The police advised vigilance in heavy traffic and protecting valuables from criminals. Security is handled by a comprehensive response unit that includes the bomb squad, counter-terrorism units, Field Force Unit, metallic barriers, UPDF, JIC, UPDAF, SFC, and Police Air Wing.

Luke Owoyesigyire stated that these measures are to counter any eventualities and ensure the safety of all pilgrims and guests during the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
