UPDF Recruit Fights on After Fainting During Drills
Okwir Levi, a young man from Okwongodul Village, Dokolo County, was determined to join the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). However, his dreams were almost cut short when he collapsed during the recruitment exercise at Dokolo Technical Institute.
Levi, who was participating in the 4-kilometer run, suddenly fainted just shy of the 1-kilometer mark. The medical team, led by Captain Doctor Alex Kissa, sprang into action, providing intensive first aid and evacuating him to a nearby medical facility.
According to Captain Kissa, Levi's blood pressure had dropped dangerously low, but prompt medical intervention saved his life. After regaining consciousness and stabilizing, Levi revealed that he had neglected to eat supper and breakfast, and hadn't taken enough water before the exercise.
According to an online medical journal, it's recommended to eat before running as this gives your body the fuel it needs to exercise safely and efficiently. If you prefer to run on an empty stomach, stick to light to moderate running.
The UPDF recruitment team is conducting a two-day exercise at Dokolo Technical Institute to select shortlisted candidates from various districts. Despite the setback, Levi's determination and courage have earned him a second chance. He will undergo further medical examinations before being cleared to continue with the recruitment process.
The exercise aims to recruit 39 candidates from Dokolo district and 30 from Amolatar district. The team will also recruit candidates from Kaberamaidi and Kalaki districts on July 10th at the same venue.
