Museveni Hails Christianity's Impact on Uganda
President Yoweri Museveni has lauded the influence of Christianity on Uganda, attributing it to the introduction of scientific knowledge, education, and key social values. The President’s message was delivered on his behalf by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa at the 60th anniversary of the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs, held at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on October 19, 2024.
"Christianity added value to our understanding of God and introduced us to scientific advancements that have helped reduce disease," Museveni stated. He emphasized that while Uganda’s indigenous societies believed in one God, Christianity enriched this belief and brought vital teachings such as loving one’s neighbor and hard work. These values, he said, guided Uganda’s leadership, especially during times of armed conflict.
The ceremony was led by Cardinal Peter K. A. Turkson, who urged Africans to draw inspiration from the martyrs’ faith, integrity, and sacrifice. "The Ugandan Martyrs teach us valuable lessons of faith, integrity, and transparency," Cardinal Turkson remarked, calling on Africans to build a brighter future grounded in gospel values.
Other key religious leaders echoed the Cardinal’s sentiments, with Archbishop Emeritus Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala calling the Martyrs "luminous heroes of the Catholic faith" and Archbishop Paul Ssemwogerere praising their bravery and devotion.
The Uganda Martyrs, canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964, continue to inspire generations across Africa and the world, with their legacy enduring as symbols of courage, faith, and resilience.
The ceremony was attended by several Ugandan leaders, including Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba and MPs Sarah Opendi, Joseph Ssewungu, and Herbert Ariko.
