Why Population Censuses are not a contradiction Christianity or Islam

posted onApril 10, 2024

Fellow Citizens, Today our Muslim faithful celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. It is a festival marking the end of Ramadan.

Exactly a month from today, the Uganda Bureau Of Statistics will undertake our once in ten years National Population and Housing Census. This census exercise is important because our government cannot accurately have evidence-based planning, policy formulation, and implementation without it.

CENSUS 2024; LET’S SUPPORT THE HOUSEHOLD LISTING AROUND K’LA

“I would like to announce the sixth National Population and Housing Census (NP&HC) that will start on 10th May, 2024”, President Museveni, said, in a statement last week.

The NP&HC will generate up-dated data and information about Uganda’s population size, distribution and its attendant demographic and socio-economic characteristics. This is the basis for evidence-based planning, policy formulation and implementation, by Government, for impactful service delivery.

The correct context of this false two months allegedly paid out to Speaker Anita Among is that the Speaker and her spouse, like other category of specified public officials in Parliament and Government, are entitled to holiday, which in her case is one month, to a destination of her choice.

G77/NAM, 2024: let’s be good hosts; and seize the opportunities

In another endorsement of our global stature, Uganda will host the Group of 77 (G77) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), summits, in January 2024. Formed during the ‘cold-war’, NAM was meant, initially to foster non-alignment with then, two world superpowers i.e. the Soviet Union and USA.
After the end of the ‘cold war’ NAM continued to evolve, and now has 120 member states. G77, a 59-year grouping now, coalesced from its inception around promoting joint socio-economic aspirations. G77 has currently has a membership of 134 developing countries.

Not many Ugandans I have interacted with know of William Winwood Reade’s collection of aphorisms published in 1872 as The Martyrdom of Man. This one book perhaps influenced Cecil J. Rhodes more than any other.

One  of its most relevant suppositions is: “Trade is the great engine of progress, empire is a necessary condition of trade, egalitarianism and liberal national sympathies a waste of time.”

An optimist’s views on West Africa’s Military coups and why they worsen an already bad situation for West Africa and Africa (Part I)

Nearly 24 months ago, on 5th September 2021, news reached us that Prof. Alpha Conde of Guinea had been overthrown by his Special Forces Commanders led by Col. Mamady Doumbouya. This coup was the second one in West Africa following the August 2020 coup in Mali.

Many are following the happenings in West Africa, where so far, 8 military coups have taken place in less than 3 years. All these coups have been in former French colonies.

My grandfather used to say: Baana'bangye kuribushesheera ehi butashesheera, am'manzi namafuura garyahemuuka! (On that day when the sun shines where it is not supposed to,  Kings and their Generals will fall short! )

It feels (or is it fills?!)  me with great pride that in these often uncertain times,  many of us can still spare time to pray and commensurate with our beloved Mzee Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni mwene Kaguta owa' Basiita ba Mpororo as he gallantly, assuredly and confidently battles the Covid19 disease. That he will emerge triumphant is not in doubt.
