Kabaka 26th Coronation Rugby Sevens Cup Launched

The event will be played on Saturday, July 20, 2019 by 12 male teams and four female teams, at the same venue. The tournament will be hosted by rugby outfit Shell Rimula Rhinos and will serve as the fifth circuit of the ongoing National 7s series that is title-sponsored by Roke Telkom.

KAMPALA - The 2019 edition of the Kabaka Coronation Rugby Sevens Cup was launched on Tuesday at Legends Bar and Restaurant in Kampala.

The event will be played on Saturday, July 20, 2019 by 12 male teams and four female teams, at the same venue. The tournament will be hosted by rugby outfit Shell Rimula Rhinos and will serve as the fifth circuit of the ongoing National 7s series that is title-sponsored by Roke Telkom.

‘We expect this to be a fun time session of rugby. This year’s theme is; sustaining environment and community,’ Rhinos Chairperson Alex Kalimugogo said at the launch. The Rugby Cup is part of the activities preceding the Kabaka’s 26th Coronation event, due on July 31.The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II was crowned king on July 31, 1993 following restoration of kingdoms by the NRM government.

The Coronation 7s event will witness its second staging in the club category but the schools event has already marked three years; with this year’s do being won by SMACK (St Mary’s College Kisubi) off a 25-10 triumph against Namilyango College over the weekend in Kisubi.

‘It is good to see schools actively playing rugby especially in this event. It is also an opportunity for the youth to join the coronation celebrations,’ Prince David Kintu Wassajja of Buganda Kingdom told the media on Tuesday adding that they take sports seriously. Vivo Energy Assistant Brands Manager Rebecca Nassiwa revealed that the event will be more engaging for the fans are set to win goodies off challenges like predict and win plus man of the match packages for outstanding players.

This year’s event is sponsored by Vivo Energy Uganda (Shell Rimula), Guinness (National 7s sponsors), Roke Telkom (2019 7s title sponsors), Buganda Land Board, Majestic Brands, Events Warehouse, Fotogenix, Movit Products Limited, DHL Uganda, Guardian Pharmacy, Pepsi and Legends Bar and Restaurant.
