NRM Members of Parliament have passed a resolution which will require them to elect parliamentary backbench commissioners. This resolution was adopted during the just concluded NRM retreat in Kyankwanzi.

According to the 8 page resolution signed by the MPs, the NRM Parliamentary Caucus has recommended to the NRM Central Executive Committee to consider approving amendments to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus Rules of Procedure and any other regulation to provide for Parliamentary Commissioners on NRM ticket to be elected by the NRM Parliamentary Caucus.

This is expected to take place with effect from December 2023, during the 3rd Session of the 11th Parliament.

Rule 11 of the Parliament Rules of Procedure provides for the composition of the parliamentary commission which among others includes four Members of Parliament one of whom shall come from the opposition and none of whom shall be a Minister. Appointment of MPs to the parliamentary commission is the prerogative of Party leadership.

NRM caucus wants to be the ones to elect their representatives other than leaving it to the NRM top leadership. During the retreat, NRM caucus also resolved committed to working to deepen Patriotic values within the Movement, and the wider Ugandan society.

They also strongly supported the call of the Secretary General, for strengthened discipline in all activities of the NRM and across all its structures and relentlessly committed to fight corruption. MPs also pledged full support to government transformative initiatives such as Parish Development Model and Emyooga.
