The 4th Session of the Ethiopia-Uganda Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) wrapped up on 4th April in Addis Ababa, marking a successful conclusion with the signing of eight significant bilateral cooperation agreements. These agreements cover a range of sectors, including aviation, minerals, water resources, and agriculture, further cementing the two countries' collaboration.
The Uganda delegation was headed by Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who several ministers, including Francis Mwebesa, the Minister of Trade Industry and Cooperatives, and Fred Byamukama, the Minister of State for Transport joined. On the Ethiopian side, the delegation was led by Dr. Gedion Timothewos, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was accompanied by Dr. Kassahun Gofe, the Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, among other sectoral ministers and representatives.
Dr. Timothewos welcomed Gen. Odongo and his team to Addis Ababa, expressing Ethiopia’s pleasure in hosting the meeting. He underscored the importance of this session as a chance to assess bilateral relations and explore ways to strengthen cooperation for the benefit of both nations. He also emphasised the need for regional collaboration to address the increasing challenges the countries face, including counter-terrorism efforts, and highlighted their shared commitment to the equitable use of Nile waters.
Odongo, in his remarks, acknowledged the growth of bilateral relations between Uganda and Ethiopia, which had remained strong despite the six-year gap in JMC sessions. He noted that the relationship had been nurtured through numerous high-level exchanges and continued engagement in various sectors. He expressed Uganda’s commitment to further strengthening these ties, with the JMC providing a new opportunity to build on this foundation.
The two-day meeting culminated in the signing of eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), covering key areas such as air services, industrial cooperation, energy, water resource management, agriculture, aviation training, and trade cooperation. These agreements will pave the way for deeper collaboration and joint efforts in various sectors. Both countries expressed their determination to implement the agreements and further elevate their bilateral relations.
