A joint military strike by the UPDF and FARDC has freed over 200 civilians from a notorious ADF stronghold along River Epulu. Following the destruction of the camp, Major General Stephen Mugerwa assured the survivors of safe repatriation as the joint forces continue to dismantle rebel networks in Eastern DRC.

A major military offensive along the Epulu River has liberated more than 200 civilians from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) conducted the joint raid. Military sources confirmed the targeted camp was under the control of notorious ADF commander Ssebagala, widely known as Mzee Mayor.

The joint forces killed several insurgents during the high-intensity battle. They also seized a significant cache of weapons and tactical equipment from the camp.

Major General Stephen Mugerwa, the Overall Joint Commander of Operation Shujaa, addressed the survivors at a processing center in Mungamba. He reaffirmed the military's dedication to dismantling the ADF's operational networks.

“You are not under detention. You are victims of abduction, and we shall ensure you are handed over to the relevant authorities so you can reunite with your families,” Maj Gen Mugerwa told the group.

The rescued individuals range in age from 14 to 19 years old. Many survivors displayed visible signs of physical trauma and severe malnutrition. Medical personnel are currently treating the group for malaria and respiratory infections.

Kasereka Ndina, a 41-year-old survivor, spoke of the immense relief felt by those who escaped the jungle camps.

“I am grateful to the joint forces for this rescue. It has renewed my hope of returning home,” Ndina said.

The offensive extended to the Ituri River, where troops intercepted insurgents attempting to cross the water. Military pressure has forced numerous escapes, with former captives seeking refuge at joint force bases in Lolwa and Babungwe.

Since January 2026, Operation Shujaa has significantly intensified its footprint in the Eastern DRC. These gains have allowed schools to reopen and stimulated cross-border trade between Uganda and Congo.
