The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has flagged off Battle Group XLVII (BG 47) to Somalia following months of intensive military preparation.
The troops completed their pre-deployment training at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSOTC) in Nakaseke District. Brig Gen Fred Mwesigye, the Commander of UPDF 1 Division, presided over the ceremony on behalf of Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
During the flag-off, Brig Gen Mwesigye lauded the soldiers for their previous roles in national security operations. He emphasized that the mission requires absolute focus and high levels of professionalism. He warned the personnel against negligence and social vices that could tarnish the reputation of the force.
“You are going on a mission, not for leisure,” Brig Gen Mwesigye emphasized. “Remain focused, work as a team, and adhere strictly to the guidance of your commanders.”
Colonel Moses Nabaasa, the Commandant of IPSOTC, confirmed that the training began in November to prepare the soldiers physically and mentally. He reported that the group reached a 95 percent preparedness rating. The Commandant reminded the troops of their role as international representatives of Uganda.
“You are going as one Battle Group, united in purpose and bound by duty,” Col Nabaasa stated.
The Commander of Battle Group XLVII, Colonel Wilson Barigye, expressed full confidence in his personnel. He credited the instructors for providing the essential skills needed for the mission. He assured the nation that his team is ready to execute its duties with courage.
“The success of our mission will reflect the quality of the training we have received,” Col Barigye said.
Local leaders also attended the ceremony to show support for the departing troops. The LC1 Chairperson of Kakoola North, Doreen Ayebare, praised the UPDF for maintaining strong ties with the surrounding villages. She wished the soldiers success and a safe return from the regional peace-building initiative.
Battle Group XLVII joins the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). This deployment continues Uganda's long-standing commitment to regional security and stability in the Horn of Africa.
