Mohamed Nazir, Project Manager at Samaco Construction, the company building Akii Bua Stadium, revealed that 30% of the work is complete.
The official deadline is January 2027, but according to reports, Nazir projects October 2026 as the likely finish date.
He noted that 950 workers are currently employed, with over 90% from Lira. Most materials, including sand, granite, cement, and steel, are sourced locally. Suppliers from Lango and nearby areas provide key inputs. Imports are used only when specialty materials are unavailable in Uganda.
The project also includes a 60 km road linking Lira to Gulu Airport via Oboke and Bobi, plus feeder roads around the stadium. These aim to connect the stadium to the region’s growth and access.
The stadium will host 20,000 spectators once complete and is expected to boost several sectors. Officials expect growth in sports tourism, hospitality, retail, and regional trade. Events will drive demand for lodging, food, transport, and entertainment, energising the local economy.
Local entrepreneurs are already positioning businesses near the stadium. New eateries, guest houses, and shops are opening in anticipation of event-driven demand.
The project is also seen as a catalyst for talent development. The Lango football team’s recent win in the national Drum tournament highlighted the region’s athletic potential. With a world-class stadium, leaders hope to identify and train promising youth for national and international competitions.
